My little man’s birth story

Posted on: May 26, 2011

Many of my friends have recently had babies and I have really enjoyed listening to the stories of how their little ones came into the world.  Here is the birth story of my little monkey.

Tuesday, November 2, 2010:  I had started my maternity leave a week earlier so I spent my day at home taking care of a few things.  Around 2:45pm, my water broke.  Since this was my first baby, I wasn’t 100% sure that is what had happened so I called the doctor’s office.  My husband had just walked in the door and arrived home from work.  The nurse told me to come in to see the doctor and bring my overnight bag with me in case we need to check in to the hospital. So, we grabbed all our stuff and headed that way.  The doctor confirmed my water had broken and sent us downstairs to check into Labor and Delivery.  By 5:15pm I was all checked in, in my room, and hooked up to the monitors.  At that point, I was having contractions but wasn’t feeling them.  The doctor said they would monitor me for a few hours and my labor didn’t progress, they would give me Pitocin to speed things up.  11:00pm rolled around and not much progress had been made, so the doctor started me on the Pitocin.  It kicked in quickly and I was soon feeling very strong contractions.

Wednesday, November 3, 2010:  By 2:30am, I was done with toughing it out and asked for an epidural.  Soon after, I was feeling great!  Well, almost…I ended up being in the small percentage of women on whom the epidural doesn’t work 100%.  My left side and legs were numb and feeling great but I was still feeling contractions on my right side.  I eventually ended up getting a second dose of the epidural because it became very painful. Things progressed nicely and I was ready to push by 11:00am.  45 minutes later my little man came into this world.  He was 7lb 3oz, 21 inches long and the most beautiful baby I had ever seen.
