Heavy eyelids

Posted on: June 17, 2011

Being a parent is one of the most exhausting jobs you will ever have.  I’m reminded of this as I sit here at my desk struggling to keep my eyes open.  Not that I need a reminder, since I live in a constant state of sleepiness.

My typical day consists of the following:

4:30am – Alarm goes off

Somewhere between 4:30-4:40 – I roll out of bed to pump

5:00am – 5:30am – Shower, dress, hair, makeup, brush teeth

5:30am – 6:20am – Baby wakes up, diaper change, get him dressed, feed him

6:20am – 7:00am – hubby gets up for work, I eat breakfast, pump again, get stuff together, and entertain baby at same time

7:00am – 7:45am – Kiss hubby goodbye, Drop baby off at sitter and go to work

7:45am – 3:45pm – Work (pump twice while at work)

3:45pm – 4:15pm – Pick up baby and drive home

4:15pm – 4:45pm – Greet my loving husband who is waiting for me, get settled in at home, pump

4:45pm – 7:00pm – Make dinner, feed baby, eat my dinner, some play time with baby, read baby story and put him to bed

7:00pm – 10:30pm – Clean up in kitchen/around house, take care of things like paying bills, etc., pump, time with hubby, off to bed

10:30pm – 4:30am – Sleep, which is usually interrupted a few times by crying baby which means, I go in his room and give him his pacifier and pray he doesn’t wake up again

It’s a non stop cycle.  And, that’s a “normal” day.  There are always those off days when “G” wakes up at 4:30 or 5:00am and I have to change our morning routine a bit.   And then, there are the nights when he wakes up more than usual for one reason or another. Of course, any time we have an evening event (doctor appointment, errands, etc.) the whole schedule is thrown off whack and mommy and daddy get even less sleep than usual.

Exhausting beyond belief!  But the joys and rewards of being a parent greatly outweigh the sleep deprivation.  So, even though I struggle to get out of bed each morning and spend my work day feeling like my eyelids weigh about 200lbs, I wouldn’t change a thing.
