Sleep deprived

Posted on: October 24, 2011

I’m going to let you in on a little secret about being a parent of a young child (perhaps even of older children, but I’m not there yet, so I don’t know).  THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP.  I don’t remember the last time I had a really great, uninterrupted, full 8 hours of sleep.  Oh, wait…yes, I do.  It was way back BEFORE I got pregnant.  Yep, that long ago.

My son has actually been sleeping through the night for a while now.  He usually sleeps 11-12 hours a night.  So, theoretically, I should be able to sleep 6-8 hours no problem.  Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Every time he makes the slightest noise, I’m up.  I lay in bed listening to every little groan, whine, whimper, cough, sigh, and movement until I can’t take it any more and get up to check on him.  And, I ALWAYS get up and check on him.  My mothering instincts won’t let me go back to sleep until I peek into his room and see his little snuggled up silhouette asleep in his crib.  Many times this middle of the night check also includes crawling on my hands and knees on his bedroom floor as I search in the dark for his pacifier, which has inevitably fallen out of his mouth and onto the floor.  I find it, wash it off, stick it in his mouth and go back to sleep.  This ritual usually occurs twice a night.  Sometimes more.

occasionally, my little monkey also wakes up crying in the middle of the night and won’t accept mommy putting the pacifier back in his mouth as comfort.  He is inconsolable, for reasons I cannot figure out, so I pick him up to hold and comfort him until he falls back to sleep.  Sometimes that can take up to an hour.  Then, I go back to bed only to hear my alarm clock go off 20 minutes later.  Sleep has eluded me yet again.

I wish I could sleep like this:

He looks so peaceful, doesn’t he?  Relaxed too.  12 hours of sleep a night…wouldn’t that be lovely?

I dream of the day when I will once again be able to enjoy a solid 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep at night but, I have a feeling that is a long way off yet.

I can promise youthose 8 hours will come back. Once he’s on a structure schedule. his bedtime is 8 p.m. and he gets up at 6 a.m. But then you have the teen years and that’s like baby years. So enjoy these moments to come! They don’t last long! 🙂

Thanks for the encouragement! 🙂

Yes, structure is key! A few recommendations worth a shot: Try placing 2 or even 3 pacifiers in his crib at night, he might hold onto one and suck on one at the same time (like Chloe still does). I’m doing the hands and knees thing ALL the time too, Chloe even helps me looks for them before bedtime 🙂 I’ve had to do it during the night too when she loses them all and needs them to go back to sleep. Another thing you could try is letting him sleep with the pacifier clip on his PJ’s so it won’t fall onto the floor (looks like you might already do this). Stratigically place those things in the crib so he can find them easily but where he won’t knock them out, like in front of a stuffed animal. You have to get creative! Good luck momma!

Thanks Ranay! He does have a structured schedule. I put him to bed at the same time every night and he wakes up at pretty much the same time every morning. He just fusses sometimes at night and needs his pacifier. Thanks for the ideas! I do have an extra pacifier in the room that I grab a lot at night, but I haven’t put them in his crib. Good idea. 🙂
