My son beats me up

Posted on: November 7, 2011

Yes, it’s true. My son beats me up.  I know what you’re thinking, “Leah, he’s only 1-year-old. How does he beat you up”?  Let me explain.  No, there is too much.  Let me sum up…

My son is half Irish (daddy) and half Italian (mommy).  As you may or may not know, Italians like to talk with their hands.  My son has already become quite good at this.  He waves his arms around as he squeals with delight, laughs, says “go, go”, and makes all his funny cute little noises.  He does this even when mommy is holding him or is right next to him.  So, as you can imagine, this can pose quite a danger to those who are near him since he doesn’t realize what he’s doing.

Just last night “G” and I were playing and his arms were flailing about and all of a sudden he wacked me right across the face and poked me in the eye in the process.  As I’m recovering and trying to make sure I can still see out of my left eye, my little monkey is laughing away and crawling all over me like I’m a jungle gym.  Shortly after that it was story time. I picked “G” up to carry him into the living room to read.  He decides it would be a good idea to wiggle and squirm while mommy is holding him and in the process lunge his head straight into my cheekbone.  Ouch!  “G” of course has no idea what he did and why mommy has to stop walking and why she’s all of a sudden seeing stars.

These types of instances, and others have been going on for quite some time now.  A few weeks ago we were playing in his room.  I was laying on the floor playing the “mommy is pretending to sleep and then wake up and say ‘boo'” game with him.  He decided to crawl on top of me (nothing new) and when he got to my chest he lunged his head forward (what’s with all the head lunging?) straight into my mouth.  I felt immediate pain, sat up and then saw the blood.  I ran to the bathroom to find a huge gash on the inside of my lip that was bleeding profusely.  I hurried to get ice and try to stop the bleeding.  I ended up with a nice fat lip that lasted a few days.

I always thought that when I had kids they would rough house with each other and get a few bumps and bruises here and there but I never expected I would be the victim of playtime and incur so many injuries.  At the rate I’m going, I imagine this is going to keep happening for quite some time….
