I know all the words

Posted on: November 17, 2011

“What do you see when you look in the mirror?  Are you happy now?  Happy is when your mouth is smiling.  C’mon show me how…”

That is part of a song on my son’s favorite toy.  This toy:  And, yes, I know all the words to that song.  In fact, not only do I know all the words to that song, I know all the words to all of the songs on all his musical toys.

When I got pregnant, I knew my baby would end up with all kinds of musical singing toys.  I’m glad he has them because he loves music.  The way he dances around when the music plays is adorable.  His little butt wiggling back and forth, huge smile on his face…it’s quite a sight!  But, what I didn’t realize was just how ingrained those songs would become into my head.  I didn’t know that I’d be sitting at my desk at work and all of a sudden be singing, “Stir, stir, stir the soup.  Give the spoon a twirl…” or “B says ‘buh’, B says ‘buh’, every letter makes a sound B says ‘buh'”.

I think musical toys should come with a warning label.  “Warning, parents may get songs stuck in their head indefinitely”.  At least then we’d know what we were in for.  I hear these songs at home, in the car, at work, in the grocery store…they just don’t go away.  And, it’s not that they’re bad songs.  In fact, they are very cute and fun educational songs.  It’s just that they get stuck in your head and don’t go away.  Kind of like that song from Lamb Chop’s Play Along. You know the one I mean.  “This is the song that doesn’t end, yes it goes on and on my friend.  Some people started singing it not knowing what it was, and they’ll continue singing it forever just because this is the song….” (I bet you all hate me now for getting that stuck in your heads.)

Since “G” is my first child and we plan on having more in the future, that means I have many years ahead yet of these songs swirling about in my brain.  Guess I’d better get used to it.

“123456789, join with me and count to ten.  123456789, 10 oh yes oh yes we can, count to ten…”

I can’t have one of those toys in my house. Two hours of the repetition would make me toss either the toy or the kid out onto the lawn. Why do kids have to love them so much? Why?

Ha! yeah…that’s how it is. and, they are of course the kids favorite toys.
