Thankful for my son’s good health

Posted on: January 13, 2012

Earlier this week I found out an old friend of mine passed away.  His name is Peter and he had Cystic Fibrosis.  I remember, when we were younger, going to visit him in the hospital when he would go in for treatments and seeing what Peter had to endure.  Despite his illness, he always had an upbeat positive outlook on life.  He was a fighter and determined not to let his CF get the better of him.

As I’ve been thinking of Peter this week and reflecting on our times together, it has also made me think of children I know who have had Leukemia or other serious illnesses.  These children endure countless doctor and hospital visits, sometimes long hospital stays, they may take multiple medications, and also have to live with the day-to-day symptoms of their illness.  No child should have to endure this.  But, the cold hard truth is that hundreds of children do.

I have come to appreciate just how fortunate my family is and that my son is healthy.  Yes, he had Torticollis. However, going to Physical Therapy once a week doesn’t even begin to compare to what it’s like having an illness like CF.  Every morning when I go into my little man’s room, I pick him up, give him a big hug, and thank God for the health he has blessed “G” with.

Oftentimes, it’s so easy to take our health for granted.  We go about living our daily lives and don’t give it a second thought.  We don’t stop to think about how blessed we are to be perfectly healthy while someone else might be dying.  Maybe we don’t think about it because it doesn’t affect us or anyone we know, but we should think about it.  We should take the time each day and say thanks for our health and the health of our families because it could always be worse.

So, thank you Lord that my little G is strong and healthy.
