Time with your spouse

Posted on: February 24, 2012

When I was pregnant some friends of mine wrote me notes with words of encouragement and advice.  I think the most important piece of advice I received was this:  No matter how busy you get with the baby, don’t neglect your husband.  Make sure to spend time with him and let him know he is important. I am very grateful to my friend for writing that because she was 100% correct.

When you have a baby, everything is so overwhelming.  All your time and attention goes to them and it’s so easy to get swept up in the business of taking care of the baby that you forget you need to spend time with your spouse as well.  My husband has been beyond AMAZING with helping take care of “G”, taking care of little things around the house so I can focus on other things, and taking care of me.  I don’t deserve him and all he’s done for me!  He has truly been wonderful and I feel I wouldn’t be a good wife if I didn’t acknowledge all he has done for me.  He needs my attention just as much, if not more, than “G”.  He is my spouse and life partner; he deserves all I have to offer; he should be first in my life.

Since our son has been born, my husband and I have made it a point to take time for us.  We schedule regular date nights/afternoons so we can spend time together just the two of us.  These have been times of refreshing for us.  Our time together has been valuable and precious.  It’s a time for us to connect on a deeper level, discuss important things going on in our lives, and strengthen our relationship.  These times have been especially important to us since my husband just returned from an 8 month deployment over seas.  There is nothing like a time of separation to make you appreciate your spouse even more.

Along with spending time with your spouse, it’s also important to encourage them daily; to let them know how much you love them and are grateful for them.  In my search for ways to do this, I discovered two blogs that have been very helpful and I would like to share them with you.  I encourage each of you to look at them and discover new ways you can spend time with your spouse and encourage them.

The first is The Dating Divas.  You can find them at www.thedatingdivas.com (or just click on their button on my sidebar).  These women post hundreds of very creative ideas for date nights, ways to encourage your spouse, gifts for your spouse, and much more.  I have very much enjoyed reading this blog and have used some of their ideas.

The second blog belongs to my friend Amy.  She’s at www.amynjesse.com (her button is also on my sidebar).  Amy recently did a series called “30 Days of encouraging your husband”.  It was a great series on a book she was reading that talked about different ways you can encourage your husband each day.  I haven’t begun this challenge yet, but am planning on doing so.  I encourage you to do the same.

If you get nothing else out of my post today, remember this: No matter how busy you get with your children, don’t neglect your husband.  Make sure to spend time with him and let him know he is important.
