Patience, do you have it?

Posted on: March 30, 2012

Patience is a virtue.  So they say.

I’m afraid I have to admit, it’s never been my strong suit.  I’ve always been quite the impatient person.  I don’t know why.  I’ve tried so hard to become more patient and some days I am.  But, there are still plenty of days where my patience goes out the window and I lose it for one reason or another.

Anyone see a problem with this?  No?  Let me point it out…I’m a mother.  Mother’s need more patience than the average person.  Otherwise, we could end up losing our tempers with our children and only end up making them feel bad and, wind up with an overpowering sense of guilt as a result.  But, does it happen?  Yes!  Why? Because we’re normal human beings who lose it every once in a while.

Here’s an example.   This morning my son was less than cooperative when it came time to change his diaper.  He refused to lay down.  He was squirming, pushing his feet against me, trying to crawl off the changing table, and doing all he could to get away from me and avoid having his diaper changed.  On top of this, I pinched a nerve this morning and had limited mobility as a result. This, plus the fact that my husband isn’t home to help and that I was running late, all piled up together and caused me to lose my patience and raise my voice to my son.  I hate doing that.  He’s one and a half and all he knows is that mommy is making him do something he doesn’t want to.  He doesn’t realize the importance of having his diaper changed; he just doesn’t want to do it.  He wants to play and I’m forcing him to do something else.  After my frustration and guilt sailed on by, I took a deep breath, tried a new tactic to distract him, and finally got him to lay down so I could change his diaper.  But, it was after the impatient monster had made her appearance.

If you’re expecting me to now give you some wonderful advice on how to increase your patience and be the “perfect” mother, you might as well stop reading.  I WISH I could do that, but I’m far from perfect.  Aren’t we all though?  If there’s anything I’ve learned about being a mother it’s this:  It’s one of the most frustrating “jobs” ever.  Yes, it’s wonderful as well, but let’s be realistic here, it’s not all candy and roses.  So, yes, we lose our patience with our children sometimes, but you know what?  It’ll be ok.  As long as we realize what we’re doing, can take a step back, take a deep breath, regroup and change our strategy, we can get through it.  Maybe that’s how we develop more patience:  Just take a step back if you feel like you’re going to lose it.  Give it a minute and then approach your child(ren) again.  And, just remember, you’re human.  You’re not perfect and you don’t have to be super mom.  We all lose it once in a while.

(Ok, so I did end up giving you some advise on increasing patience after all.  What do you know?).

I am so glad to know I’m not the only one! I feel guilty but honestly it would take a whole lot of Valium to keep anyone from ever getting frustrated! (sort of kidding on the medication… Sort of not.. Ha)
I do think that even though we show frustration how we handle ourselves after really teaches our children incredible lessons!

And I’m glad I’m not the only one! 🙂 Good to know other momma’s out there feel the same way.

Had one of those days today too :(. Nice to hear from another momma :).

Stinks, doesn’t it? Ugh…But, it’s good to know we’re not alone.
