A second chance

Posted on: April 30, 2014

My little one is 7 months old now.  I love this age!  From 6 months-1 year old, babies are discovering all kinds of new and exciting things.  They are also growing rapidly!  This is when they learn to crawl, get teeth, learn to stand, clap their hands, can do baby signs, start using a sippy cup, eat solid foods, begin to babble sounds like “mama” and “dada” and “gaga”, and even begin to show their personalities.  There is a lot that happens in those six months!

When “G” was 6 months old my husband was deployed to Afghanistan and was gone for 8 months.  During that time I took care of “G” on my own.  I was working full-time and was mommy and daddy full-time.  I would drop “G” off at the babysitters house in the morning, go to work, pick him up after work, go home and take care of him until bedtime.  After he was in bed, I would clean up, do work for my part-time job, and take care of things I couldn’t while “G” was awake.  During this time, I watched “G” grow and learn new things.  I enjoyed seeing him hit each milestone and then begin working on the next one.  But, something was missing for me.

There were times when he did something for the first time at the babysitters house and I didn’t get to see it.  I’d be so disappointed I had missed out on that special moment.  Then, there were all the firsts I did get to experience but didn’t make me feel as happy as I thought it should.  I was joyful and excited to watch “G” learn to crawl and stand up and get his first haircut but, without my husband there to be part of the experience, it was also a bit sad.  I don’t feel like I really fully enjoyed that time period in “G”‘s life.  Between being emotionally drained and utterly exhausted from parenting on my own, I was often too tired or sad to fully enjoy my son growing up right in front of me.

Now, with “RJ”, I feel like I have a second chance.  I’m a stay-at-home mom and get to spend all day long with my precious boys.  I got to enjoy watching “RJ” go from scooting around on the floor, to doing a low crawl, to getting up on his hands and knees and doing a full crawl.  I enjoy watching him play with his toys and discovering how they work, clapping his hands, seeing him get excited when I do sign language for him.  And, the best part is that my husband is home and gets to experience it all right along side of me.  This time, we both get to watch our little baby grow up and learn new things right before our eyes; this time, we can both get full enjoyment from it.   And, it’s fantastic!
