Meeting the author

Posted on: March 22, 2015

Recently, I posted that I was going to be editing a couple of books for a local author. That has been taking up a lot of my time, but in a good way. I have finished two books for him so far and will begin a third within the next couple of months.

I’m going to be completely open and honest here, when I first responded to him and told him I would edit his books, I was terrified. I couldn’t believe someone was trusting me enough to edit their novels. Many questions floated through my mind…was I experienced enough to do this, would he like my edits, what if I didn’t do a good job and ruined his book. So many thoughts…

But I knew this was something I wanted to do. I knew I had to give it a try. So I took a leap of faith and dove in and I’m so glad I did. Helping this author has been a learning experience for me in many ways. It’s given me the chance to learn more about just how different everyone’s writing styles really are and how wonderful that is. This experience has given me more confidence in my journalistic abilities and has made me realize pursuing a minor in Journalism in college was a good choice. It has helped me grow as a writer myself and has encouraged me to finally begin writing a children’s book I’ve had rattling around in my brain for years.

This month, the first book I edited was published! The author, D.R. Beavers, went to a local Barnes and Nobles store for a new authors night they were having. So, I hopped in my car, drove just over an hour to get there, walked into the store and finally had the privilege of meeting the author I’ve been conversing with through email for the past four months. It was so exciting to see his book in print and know I had a part in helping that book come to life! Beavers was as excited to meet me as I was to meet him and introduced me to many people as his editor. It was a great experience.

I am looking forward to editing a third book for him and possibly more in the future. I’m glad I stepped outside my comfort zone and took that leap of faith.
