We made it through the first week!

Posted on: September 1, 2015

Last week was Giovanni’s first week of school. Last year he just did half day preschool but this year he is in a full day four-year old class. FULL DAY. I hardly know what to do with that. To say it is strange not having him at home with me during the day, is an understatement. Even his little brother, Raylan, notices a difference. He’ll walk around the house asking where Giovanni is. It’s pretty sweet, actually.

We had talked about going to preschool a lot with Giovanni and he seemed pretty excited. However, when last Monday rolled around, he wasn’t exactly thrilled to be going to school all day.

That face says it all. He did not want us to leave him. But, after we showed him around his new classroom and helped him sign in, he began to calm down and seemed more comfortable. So we said goodbye and left, not knowing what the day would bring.

When it was time to pick him up, he was like a whole different child. Giovanni was so happy and excited! He couldn’t wait to tell me all about his first day at school. I heaved a sigh of relief and asked him about his day as we headed home.

The rest of the week went very well. We had a rough morning on Wednesday, but he eventually calmed down and had a wonderful day at school.

Yesterday and today were a little rough though. Giovanni just didn’t seem to want to go to school. He wanted to stay home with mommy and Raylan. His teacher said the second week is often harder. It was easy to see this when I dropped him off both Monday and today because there were at least three other kids each day who were crying and upset their parents were leaving. But, the good news is that at the end of the day when I pick him up, he is all smiles. That’s what matters most. While Giovanni may be having a hard time adjusting to going back to school, he is still enjoying it and having fun and that makes my heart happy.
