A transition for the new year

work from home

When my oldest son was born, I was working full time. After maternity leave, I went back to work and he went to daycare. When my second son was born, my husband and I crunched the numbers and realized my entire paycheck would essentially be going to pay for day care for two children. So it was at that point that I became a stay-at-home mom. I was definitely at a point in my life where I was ready for a change and wanting to be home with my boys. But, living on one income is not easy. We made it work, but it took a lot of sacrifices. Then, last year we packed up our life in Chicago and moved to South Carolina for my husbands new job and a new adventure.

We decided that I would stay at home a bit longer while we adjusted to life in the South and also because we wanted our oldest to attend half day preschool. But, money has been tight. So, I began freelancing in a couple of different areas and also working (very) part time at USC School of Medicine as a standardized patient. The only problem is that freelance work is not steady so it doesn’t help pay the bills. My husband and I have begun to realize I might have to go back to work full time sooner than we expected.

This was a hard pill for me to swallow as my desire is to continue to stay home with my children and do my freelance work. So, I prayed about it and put it in God’s hands. I didn’t know what would happen but I knew I had to trust in God’s will for my life.

A good friend of mine, who has a three year old son, was pregnant with twins at the time. She had also previously worked full time and then switched to working part time from home when her son was born. But, since she was now going to have twins and a three year old at home, she decided to quit her job. As fast as the words came out of her mouth, the following words came out of mine, “Are they going to hire someone to replace you? I’d be interested.” And that’s how it began…

Here I am now, just one month later, a stay-at-home/work-from-home mommy. And I love it. It’s definitely been a transition already. How I arrange my days now is quite different than it was before I was working. Raylan’s nap time is now work time, morning routines are adjusted if I need to work in the morning for a bit, and sometimes I work in the evening after the boys are in bed. But, it’s all worth it! It has been the perfect solution for our family. I can continue to stay at home with my boys but am able to contribute more financially. And, I still get to do my freelance work.

God brought about the perfect solution for us and we couldn’t be happier.
