How to Start a Self Care Routine for Moms

Posted on: May 16, 2016

Today I’d like to introduce you to my friend Angela from Setting My Intention. I’m very excited to have her guest posting here. She brings a new perspective on how moms should take time to take care of themselves. A nice follow up to Erin’s post from last month.

Starting a Self Care routine for moms

It’s the day before Mother’s Day as I’m writing this post on promoting self care for moms. The timing is appropriate, don’t you think? As moms, most of us are continually giving of ourselves without taking the time to actually replenish our souls with much needed solitude, silence, and plain old fun.

I just came back from a long weekend away with my sisters and my mom. When I came home, my youngest son observed, “Mom, you seem so happy after your trip.” It was true. I was happy and relaxed. I was also really happy to be back with my family and my normal routine. His observation though reinforced once again how important it is for me to regularly do things that are life giving and fun.

Taking care of ourselves as moms should be a regular part of our days. I know that I’m not going to be taking long weekends away on a regular basis, but there are things that I do on a daily, and weekly basis that “fill me up” so that I can be fully present and joyfully serve my family.

Daily Life Giving Habits

Here are 4 things that I strive to do on a daily basis that are life giving to me:

  1. Read scripture

  2. Pray

  3. Breathe. I take at least 3 deep belly breaths in the morning. This centers me and helps me start the day mindfully and centered.

  4. Write down 3 things that I’m grateful for

I’m not spending 30 minutes on each of these things. It’s more like 5-10 minutes, sometimes less and sometimes more depending on my mornings. If I required myself to sit down every morning for 30 minutes, I would never do it. Starting habits in 5 minute increments has been life changing.

What small things can you implement into your mornings that are life giving to you?

Weekly Life Giving Habits

Here are 4 things that I strive to do on a weekly basis that are life giving to me:

  1. Exercise (at least 3 days a week – where I’m breaking a sweat)

  2. Meal Plan. This makes our family life run so much smoother. I just started doing this last Fall and it has brought us so much peace.

  3. Declutter for at least 15 minutes a week. I think and feel so much better when our space is uncluttered.

  4. Blog weekly. Blogging takes time and energy, but it’s a creative outlet that I really enjoy.

What is one thing you can add to your week that would bring you joy?

I really want to encourage you to take 5 minutes right now and jot down some life giving habits for yourself. Life giving pursuits don’t have to be sporadic or complicated. They can be as simple as a hot cup of coffee accompanied by 5 minutes of silence.

What do you do on a daily or weekly basis that brings you joy? We’d love to know in the comments!
