Why Sometimes Even Mommy needs a Time Out

It had been one of those days.

My two year old had been whiny all day and needing constant attention. I felt tired and run down. From the moment I got home from picking up my five year old from preschool, the boys began to bicker. Constant bickering and fighting. Dinner needed to be put on the table. There was still work to be done and laundry to be folded and put away. The boys and my husband were all needing something from me at the same time. Multiple voices raised at once calling my name. And to top it all off, “Aunt Flo” was knocking at my door just waiting to make her entrance.

It was overwhelming.

It was more than I could handle.

I could feel the stress and tension rising up in my body like lava in a volcano about to erupt. I knew that if I didn’t step away I was going to explode and completely lose it on my children and my husband and I didn’t want to do that. So I did the only thing I could. I took a time out. I looked at my family and said, “Mommy needs a break right now,” walked out of the kitchen and upstairs to my bedroom and closed and locked the door. I took a deep breathe, collapsed on my bed and just laid there for a few minutes. After I felt more composed, I sat up and read for a bit. I didn’t go back downstairs until I felt calm and more relaxed.

 

Sometimes moms just need a break. And you know what? That’s OK.

 

It’s ok to step away for a few minutes when you feel stressed and overwhelmed.

 

It’s ok to take time for yourself, mamma. 

 

Let’s be honest. Being a mother is HARD WORK. It is a 24/7 job that never quits. It’s exhausting, stressful, overwhelming, and wonderful all at the same time. And sometimes it’s more than we can handle. Some days are just too much. And it’s better to step away in those difficult moments than to lash out at our families.

And when you do have those days, remember what it says in Matthew 11:28:

When you feel overwhelmed and stressed, look to God. He will give you all you need. He will fill you up, take your stress away, and give you rest and peace.

And, remember mamma, it’s OK to take a time out.
