Simple Homemade Lasagna

post

I am Italian through and through. 100%

One of my favorite things about growing up in a LARGE Italian family was gathering for Sunday dinner every week at my grandmother’s house. I loved spending time with my family and eating my grandmother’s homemade sauce and meatballs with every pasta dish we had. My all time favorite Italian dish has always been lasagna. And, of course, my grandmothers was the best and I learned to make it from her.

I think sometimes people get intimidated by lasagna. They think it’s too much work to make and don’t want to try it. But, it’s really not that hard. It’s actually a simple process that just repeats itself. To prove my point, I’m going to share my grandmother’s lasagna recipe with you. But don’t tell my family I gave the secret away because I don’t want to end up with a horse’s head in my bed!

Now, as always, I’m afraid I don’t measure when I cook. It’s all part of being Italian. But, I did my best to put some measurements below for you.

Ingredients

Pasta Sauce (I use homemade but you can definitely use jar sauce, if you prefer)

1 pound ground beef – cooked and seasoned (will explain below)

3/4 pound Lasagna noodles

1 cup Ricotta cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 tsp pepper

1/2 tsp garlic salt

1 egg

Chopped fresh Parsley

Recipe

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Cook lasagna noodles until they are al dente. Drain and set aside.

In a bowl mix Ricotta, Parmesan, pepper, garlic salt, egg, and parsley. Mix until fully blended and it has a nice creamy texture.

Put some pasta sauce in the bottom of a 9×13 baking dish then place three lasagna noodles on top.

Next, spread some of the Ricotta mixture onto each of the lasagna noodles.

Crumble the ground beef on top of the Ricotta layer. For the meat, I use my homemade meatballs and just break them up into pieces. But, if you don’t make your own meatballs, you can use store bought meatballs (Another option for the meat is to brown ground beef in a pan and season with garlic salt, pepper and oregano while cooking and then use that).

Add some sauce on top of the meat.

Place three more lasagna noodles on top and repeat the above process.

I usually do 3 filled layers and then put my final row of noodles on top. Once your final row is on, cover with sauce and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.

Enjoy!

Sounds delicious! We usually use Cottage Cheese and Mozzarella, but I bet that Ricotta and Parmesan taste really great together. Will have to try it 🙂

The cottage cheese sounds good also! A friend of mine made it once with Ricotta and cream cheese. That was super yummy too!
